Under the Tuscan Sun

RoccodeMacieTuscan reds have become richer in keeping with the worldwide trend for this style. But there are still a few traditionalists about crafting light, lively wines that are WONDERFUL partners for summer meals – BBQ’d burgers or chicken thighs…or a platter of salamis, bread and cheese. Try Rocca delle Macie 07 Chianti and see how the refreshing and fun nature of this wine suits the season. And you’ll get a little of Tuscany too! Lightly chill and have a second bottle ready.

Cono Sur Viognier

viognierCono Sur put a lot of effort into developing lesser known grape varieties such as Viognier, Taste their 08 and you’ll be delighted that they’re doing this. I’ll be shocked if it doesn’t rock your world big time. It’s a bit like Chardonnay but more delicate and elegant. Rich white that’s refreshing and god at the tease. Charm shows up on the second glass and after that, you’ll have to surrender as exotic flavours appear out of no where.  Plan the night.

Available at LCBO Vintages on August 29th.

Bubbly for Everyone

barefootbubbly

You don’t become the world’s largest winery without knowing a thing or two about popular taste. What most people enjoy. Gallo’s ‘Barefoot Bubbly’ is the style of wine I’ll take to a family gathering, to folks who are a little nervous about wine, or to an all out PARTY PARTY event. It’s lighthearted, easy drinking and out to please. And you’ve got to admit Barefoot Bubbly has a fun ring to it. Another use – Sunday brunch, or course.

The Secret Formula for Local House White

InniskillinReislPGThe Aussies love their white blends such as Sem/Sauv and Sem/Chard and now we’re starting to see our local wineries offering blends of white grape varieties. Such as Inniskillin’s Riesling/Pinot Grigio.

Inniskillin has taken some of the edge off dry Riesling by blending it with Pinot Grigio –  the result is a good all-purpose white.  It’s low alcohol too, so try a bottle for after work relaxing. This might be the perfect blend for Ontario house wine. Watch for it on the shelves in September.
