Exploring PEC – Waupoos

Waupoos is an old Indian word for ‘rabbit’ and the area is gorgeous! The Waupoos area actually lies between the head of Smith’s Bay and Cape Vesey or the ‘Rock’. This area is apple country, featuring an apple blossom festival in Mayand pick-your-own apples in the fall. In the summer, the road is loaded with hollyhocks, and you can pick-you-own blueberries and raspberries.

Beautiful location by the lake. Huge range of wines, many in the popular medium-dry and medium-sweet style. No aspirations to greatness but an important part of the Waupoos experience.
Recommended: The 08 Auxerrois ($15.95) is a zingy fresh aperitif.

Count Cider Company www.countycider.com
Very good dry cider, a beer or two and a patio overlooking the lake. Tasty food from the woodburning oven and a great charcuterie plate. Friendly, casual and no pretense. A must visit. One of the best views you’ll find –  overlooking Lake Ontario.
Recommended: Non-oaked 08 Chardonnay ($19.95) is really good, if a bit pricey.

You must visit the Fifth Town Cheese Dairy www.fifthtown.ca which is just down the road from the Cider Company. World class all the way – in design, landscape, environmental practices and of course, the sheep and goat cheese.

Early in the day you can catch breakfast at the Waupoos Marina and later there’s lots to drink and eat at the Marysburg Pub close by.

Kato Wake is an entrepreneur – a creative thinker and a visual maker with over twenty years experience in the design business. She possesses strong communication skills and has managed teams and groups of many sizes. Creative, resourceful and curious by nature – Kato is an ideas person and a problem solver. She sees the big picture, the practical steps needed to achieve it and the means to do so. Experienced with both print and web, she is motivated by serving the client and communicating ‘their story’ – however it needs to be told. She has been involved in the restaurant and hospitality industry for almost as long as Billy – but hasn't drunk quite so much. Over the years, Kato has instructed hundreds of hospitality workers in 'the art of service' and has implemented training programs for several restaurants. Presently, Kato manages both the print and web for Billy’s Best Bottles (www.billysbestbottles.com) and has designed 10 editions of Billy’s Best Bottles annual wine book – which has been a Canadian best seller each year. She also designed Kathy Guidi’s book on Canadian Cheese (published by McArthur and Company) and is currently designing a breakfast cookbook for County resident Elizabeth Pulker. As Billy's 'right hand woman', she helps him conduct seminars is is the 'operations manager' behind the Wine with Life Tours. :)

    Looking forward to some reviews of your County tastings, Billy.

    Wife and I just returned from a week long PEC trip. Tasted most evverything too!
    Highly impressed with the Long Dog Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, Hardie Pinot Gris, Grange Chardonnay and By Chadsey’s Cairn Chard and Rose. Had some really great meals at Currahs, Harvest and Merril Inn. Gotta mention the “Campfire” ice cream from Scoops in Bloomfield too!

    What an unexpected gem si PEC. Won’t stay hidden for long…

    Our most oft repeated line for the week; “This is our first trip here but it won’t be our last! “
