LCBO Vintages Saturday September 3

Here’s an opportunity to grab some primo local wines at the September 3rd release. And a cuddly winter red from South Africa.

JTWHITE
JACKSON-TRIGGS 09 ‘SILVER SERIES’ GEWURZTRAMINER, VQA Niagara
247767 $19.95
Jackson-Triggs attempt at a dry, rich style Gewurz is a huge success. It’s an exciting wine because the three elements – flavour, richness and freshness are all playing equally well. Working the tune like a jazz trio. Impossible to drink this wine and not feel happy.

RED
HENRY OF PELHAM 09 BACO NOIR RESERVE, VQA Ontario
461699 $24.95 (see yesterday’s post)

FAMILYHENRY OF PELHAM 09 FAMILY TREE RED, VQA Niagara 247882 $18.95
Medium-bodied, multi-grape blend with bright flavours and lots of vitality. Cheerful and very gulpable. Very bistro. Nice peppery flavours from the Syrah in the blend.

rosewoodROSEWOOD 09 PINOT NOIR, VQA Twenty Mile Bench 112177 $20
Delish with very bright, natural flavours. Drinking beautifully now. A rare good value in local Pinot. Get lots.

LaileyLAILEY 09 PINOT NOIR, VQA Niagara 591404 $25
I always enjoy the frank, ‘drink me’ quality of Lailey Pinot. And they don’t over charge.

lambershoekLAMMERSHOEK 06 ROULETTE, Swartland, South Africa 58164 $23.95
Super-rich, warming lush version of Chateauneuf du Pape. Will be a wonderful winter night companion.

LCBO Vintages Saturday November 13

THE LOW DOWN: I am not able to report on this release because I missed the tasting due to a last minute change in the date. However, I had previously tasted a few of the wines and I’d like to take this opportunity to catch-up on earlier released Italian wines that are still available. All is not lost.

Chateau des Charmes 08 Chardonnay Musque, VQA Niagara-in-the-Lake 640516 $16.95
Chardonnay Musque has become an Ontario speciality and a great example of the distinctive pure quality of local whites. A refreshing non-oaked wine with a delicate hit of Muscat. I’d call it yummy, delightful and fun. Pour this at Holiday events and watch faces light up. Joy to the world.

chiantiREDS
Wine-Style: Rustic Red
Tenuta il Corno 07 Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Tuscany, Italy 123752 $14.95
Another very traditional Italian wine. Earthy, rustic and crying out for the dinner table. With simply grilled or roasted meat.

Wine-Style: Rusticdolcetto Red
Pietro Rinaldi 08 Dolcetto d’Alba ‘Madonna di Como’, Piedmont, Italy 182261 $16.95
My second Dolcetto within a month! A must for fans of traditional very dry, rustic Italian reds. Grabs the taste buds and says let’s eat. Cannot get enough of Italian gusto.

treroseWine-Style: Rich Red
Angelini 07 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ‘Tre Rose’, Tuscany, Italy 963199 $21.95
Vino Nobile is usually serious in style and price, but here’s an exception. Rustic meets charm. A very graceful Tuscan wine with the lighter feeling of Burgundy. At peak now. A Saturday night special for sure. Best from a decanter, and Riedels sitting on linen.

JTWine-Style: Rich Red
Jackson-Triggs 07 Shiraz ‘Delaine Vineyard’, VQA Niagara 86553 $29.95
Crafted in the Rhone style but with enough spicy sweetness to get lots of wows. As exotic as we dare to get in Canada. I love the mix of refreshment and nourishment. Elegant too. I’d go with white meat. A local hero for sure.
P.S. The Delaine vineyard is on the Niagara Parkway and was planted by Donald Triggs (ex Jackson-Triggs) and his partner, Elaine – hence the name. You can find other excellent Delaine wines at WineRack Stores.

FREIWine-Style: Rich Red
Frei Brothers 07 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, California 91025 $22.95
Typical Californian Pinot Noir – spicy sweet and sure to seduce. A delicious dose of niceness. You cannot fail for romance, family events or fireside sipping.

JT_SBLesson #10 COOL vs HOT

Grape variety is often prescribed as the way to select wines, but I disagree. Sure, it’s a good starting point, but winemaker’s style and climate are what usually determines the wine’s style or character. The overall feeling.

Case in point are the two Jackson-Triggs Sauvignon Blanc wines found at your local LCBO. The Ontario wine is crisp and refreshing, while the Okanagan Sauvignon is mellow and rich. Ontario cool climate versus west coast warm climate. Up tight versus laid back. Different styles – different uses. Have the Ontario for aperitif and the Okanagan with a spicy BBQ’d chicken. Have fun.

Two reasons to drink Canadian eh!

JACKSON-TRIGGS 08 Sauvignon Blanc, VQA Niagara 58438 13.75

JACKSON-TRIGGS 07 Sauvignon Blanc, VQA Okanagan 593111 13.75

Olympic Watching Wine #5

‘A COLD GLASS OF SOMETHING COLD & FUN’

This is the wine to have open in your fridge for short episodes of Olympic watching. The spicy, zesty quality of Gewurztraminer delivers an instant lift – a shot of fun. And Jackson-Triggs is the official wine sponsors of the games. Everyone wins.

JACKSON-TRIGGS 07 Gewurztraminer, VQA Niagara 526269 $11.95

Affordable Pinot

Ontario is destined to become a hot region for Pinot Noir and many of the premium-priced wines are already of international quality. However, once you become addicted to Pinot you start wishing there was an affordable, everyday edition. A Pinot to have with a traditional roast chicken. J-T’s Pinot delivers these wishes. It’s lively, spirited and simple at first, but unfolds with the earthy Pinot thing. Good stuff for the price and I love the ‘realness’ in this wine.
