BILLY AWARDS 2011

BEST LOCAL WINERY – The People’s Award

One of the major Canadian magazines has given their Winery of the Year award to Tawse. For the second year in a row. I’m in total agreement because this Beamsville winery has produced a huge array of stunning wines over the past few years. If you buy wines in the $20-$45 range Tawse delivers the goods as well, if not better, than anyone on the planet. Be sure to include it on your next Niagara trip.

Now, for my People’s Winery of the Year award. The winery that delivers the most excitement at everyday prices, and which scores for availability at the LCBO is Pelee Island. Pelee is a large scale producer with lots of experience in blending fruit from all over Ontario and offering good tasting, low priced wines. If you get out of urban centres and travel around the province you’ll see how Pelee has probably converted more people to ‘local’ than any other winery.

Over the past few years, however, Pelee has upped-the-ante with their ‘Lighthouse’ and ‘Alvar’ lines which offer fabulous varietal character plus. Amazing wines for $12–$15. To top it off Pelee’s ‘Secco’ is a great Ontario edition of Prosecco. It’s about time that GM/original winemaker, Walter Schmoranz, got some recognition for decades of great work in our local industry. Go Pelee!

An Excellent Local Foursome

ALVARA Foursome of Excellent Local Wines at Reasonable Prices

While there are lots of really good local wines to be had they tend to be expensive (see April 11 post). It’s the nature of the business. But I have good news. The folks at Pelee Island have launched some of the best popular priced local wines I’ve ever tasted. Premium for less than $15.

Pelee could be described as the Wal-Mart of local wine – delivering ‘something for everyone’ at everyday prices. Hugely popular with price conscious drinkers – but off-the-radar for most ‘gourmet’ wine enthusiast. But these new wines could change everything. I was blown away and I’ll be surprised if you’re not equally impressed, and delighted.

Besides delivering quality at a good price the wines are truly local in style.  best thing about these wines is the local flavour. While they are editions of wines from elsewhere, the feeling is cool climate Ontario. Somewhere between France and California. A style that makes us unique.

The wines I’m recommending are branded under the ‘alvar’ name which is a tree that grows on Pelee Island. The look is classy so you can feel, and look good buying local – which is important. Continue reading →

Pelee Does Prosecco

Secco-VQAI have a glass of bubbly almost every day because I love how it makes me feel. Life is good and all that. Spanish, Italian or Aussie cheapies are my usual choices but now there’s a local that I’ve added to my list. Pelee Island Winery has just launched a fresh, fruity bubbly with the lighthearted, fun feeling of Prosecco. Wine for everyday. And at an everyday price. Which is the Pelee trademark.

Congrats to Pelee not only on an excellent wine but on a package that echoes to fun nature of the contents. Sure to put you in the mood for summer evenings on the patio.

Check my blog over the next few weeks for several more good buys from Pelee.

Value Priced Local Whites

peleeColioThe two big Lake Erie wineries are the kings of value in local wine. Large scale production and a strong everyday focus combines to create wines that can compete with budget priced imports. Especially if you purchase the larger size bottle.

Pelee’s Blanc de Blanc has the invigorating quality of Riesling along with a trace of peachy Vidal flavour. Lots of pucker-power for the big thirst, the big bash, or a hot afternoon on the beach. Pelee is really good at cheapo local.

You’ll find the same low on flavour but big on refreshment quality in Colio’s Moonlight. Shades of a good Italian café wine – at an Italian price. Stick a bottle in the fridge for everyday sloshing. And it’s low alcohol to boot.

Pelee Scores with Pinot

pellepnwebPinot Noir is always pricy but if you’re a fan Pelee’s 07 Reserve is the bargain of the year. Semi-rich, spicy/sweet and drop dead charming. All the Pinot qualities. Perfect for just about any summer event and food.
