Cabernet ripens really well down Pelee way, and this is wonderful local steak wine. Medium-rich with a little rustic edge. Pour from a decanter and celebrate Canadiana.

Monstant (Catalonia) reds remind me of the Rhone (same grapes) but with more heft. And the difficult to describe ‘Spanish feeling’. Strawberries! Wonderfully refreshing for a rich red. Grilled steak or lamb.

If you’re craving a big Aussie (wine that is) have a date with the Jester. Combines character with easy drinkability and warmth. Better with steak than traditional holiday fare. Impressive looking gift.

Big bold Vintage Port at an appealing price. Enjoy with a cheese platter. Needs decanting as there’s sediment.

‘PREMIUM SIPPING REDS’

Here’s a thought. If we’re watching our athletes competing against the best why shouldn’t we be sipping on some of our best wines? TV watching is usually associated with low quality drinks, but it doesn’t have to be. Why not multi-task – double the fun – with interesting wine experiences?Not the super-expensive, but certainly an upgrade.

Everyone loves Pinot Noir and it’s one of Canada’a best performers. Several wineries produce gold medal quality editions but I’d like to recommend a pair of ‘silvers’ that are more affordable and suited to mid-week sipping. Pelee’s Pinot is a bit of a secret and a great value. A lively partner for pizza. Prospect’s Pinot is more mellow and West Coast. Think hot ‘n spicy foods.

Pinot Grigio is the blue jeans of the wine world – simple but good. A feel good, and comfortable wine.

Background stuff is not something that excites, or strokes the ego of most winemakers but some here in Ontario are willing to oblige. And impress. Pelee Island has been producing very gulpable Pinot Grigio for as long as I remember and the 08 vintage may be their best ever. Fresh, fruity and a best buddy from the first sip. Summer patio stock for sure. Creekside in Niagara produces a drier edition that will hit the spot on hot days. Handy screwcap.
