THE LOW DOWN: A very traditional Côtes du Rhône is my highlight of this release. Bistro at its best. Earthy but also rich is the Priorat from the North of Spain. Characterful stuff. For an interesting white wine experience check out Greco di Tufo from the south of Italy. This ancient Greek grape variety can [...]
And I don’t mean blush. I’m delighted to see that pink wine is at last catching on. (Even with the guys. My Men in Pink lunch was a big hit this summer. So why not keep a good thing going?) Rosé with Indian curry is one of my favourite wine and food combinations. It’s also REALLY [...]

THE LOW DOWN: Love the catalogue with the Italian feature – timely, as so many Italian reds have a woodsy, fall-day feeling. Check out the Capraia Chianti. But whites are best in this release, with outstanding local Riesling, Soave and Chardonnay from Burgundy. For Thanksgiving, I highly recommend going local – Henry of Pelham 07 [...]
With all the jazzy 08 Sauvignon’s arriving from down under countries it’s easy to think that 07 locals may be past their expiry date. Henry certainly isn’t. It’s mild flavoured – but turbo charged with citrussy refreshment. Drinks like a dip in the cool lake. Fantastic summer house wine. Handy screwcap.

SOUTHBROOK 08 Cabernet Rosé, VQA Niagara on the Lake
(Winery/Vintages in the Fall) $17.95
Hits a lot of wine spots – refreshing, kinda rich and pleasant. Good for lunch, afternoon or supper. An organic/biodynamic wine that shows the potential of Ontario dry rosé. Premium priced but delivers quality.
P.S. Malivoire’s delicious ‘Ladybug’ Rosé (previous recommendation) will be back [...]
The LCBO’s dry Rosé program now in full swing so here are a few more wines to add to previous recommendations.
Spain Does Dry Rosé
Spain probably makes more everyday-good Rosé than anyone. Rosé and tapas are part of their culture. Grazing wine and grazing food.
OSBORNE 08 Rosado ‘Solaz’, Spain 622076 $11.10
Lots of flavour, pretty and [...]

THE LOW DOWN: There’s lots of super-rich, crowd-pleasing reds in the Malbec feature – go get em! My single recommendation is more in the traditional style. As is the wonderful Fontodi Chianti Classico. Something different in a picnic red is the Gamay/Pinot blend from Switzerland. And fans of the juicy Porcupine Ridge will be happy [...]

A few days ago I celebrated Martin Malivoire Day – my annual get together/tasting with the owner of one of Niagara’s top wineries (and organic too) at Gamelle restaurant.
As you might know, my reviews are based on independent tastings done either at my office or at trade events but I also welcome the opportunity to [...]
THE LOW DOWN: Dry Rosé is the feature and I’m recommending five wines including a great-value local from Tawse Estate. My picks are novel whites from Greece and Austria, and a lone Aussie red.

style: RICH WHITE
RABL 06 Grüner Veltliner ‘G’, Kamptal, Austria 117390 $29.95
This is one of those pricey wine experiences worth paying for. While [...]
The LCBO’s summer line-up of dry Rosé is now on the shelves and there’s lots to explore. Good values from South America and Spain, but I’m going with La Vieille Ferme again this year. A lovely combo of refreshment and teasing richness found in Rosés from the south of France.
La Vieille Ferme 08 Rosé, Côtes [...]
